Top 10 bearded characters in cinema

Where there's a beard, there's probably a story. ~ Beardo
Where there's a story, there's probably memorable characters. ~ Hollywood
Where there's a beard and a character, he's probably a villain. ~ Bollywood
Now not debating with so much linear logic, we decided to rate our favourite film characters on the basis of their beards. Now while this isn't an exhaustive or official list, here are a few in must haves for characters to be entered on this list. They must have a beard for most of the movie - DUH! They must be a memorable character - This is idiot-proofing isn't it? The movie must be a popular one So here's our list of the 10 top beards from movies.

10. Character: Gandalf, Movie - The Lord of the Rings (All of them, thus far)

via GIPHY Sir Ian McKellan, or Scottish for acting, brings this immortal (quite literally) character to life on the silver screen. Kind hearted and noble, but equal parts an effing badass, Gandalf is one of those characters that doesn't mind going a wee bit dark in order to reach his goal, which in this case, is definitely the noblest of them all, i.e. the destruction of the ONE ring.

9. Character: Khal Drogo TV Show - Game of Thrones

via GIPHY Lord of the Khal, Drogo, essayed by Jason Momoa, is the quintessential badass. I mean there's nothing else you can say about the guy. He literally rides, hunts and fornicates, and in that order. Also he landed by far one of the hottest women in television today, the Khaleesi, a.k.a. Daenerys Targaryen a.k.a. Emilia Clarke!

8. Character: Gabbar Singh Movie: Sholay

via GIPHY Our first desi entry into this list, Gabbar Singh, portrayed by the late Amjad Khan is one of those characters that you just plain know (and if you don't, you've probably been living under a f*****g rock). Evil, pure evil and just plain hilarious at times, he gave us kids of the 80s some of our most lasting catchphrases, our favourite one being (hold your horses) Soovar ke bachchon

7. Character: Maximus Decimus Meridius Movie: Gladiator

via GIPHY My name is Maximus Decimus, Meridius, commander of the legions of the North, and servant of the true Emperor Marcus Aurelius, father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance in this life or the next. If this line doesn't stick in your memory, you probably won't remember Russell Crowe's take in the Oscar award winning Ridley Scott film, Gladiator. This character was so kickass, that it completely overshadowed other bearded characters in the film, and his antics with a sword EPIC, absolutely EPIC!

6. Character: Pratap Narayan Tilak Movie: Krantiveer

via GIPHY Well this one's quite the no-brainer, even for kids of the millennium (you guys never saw a single facial hair on most of your heroes). Krantiveer was one of Nana Patekar's most explosive performances (and let's face it, he's had several explosive performances), and come to think of it he's the only one (LITERALLY EVER) to have refused to shave for a role and be his own man! Good on you sir, good on you!

5. Character: Bullah Movie: Gunda

via GIPHY This one's a little bit out there. But in our opinion, Mukesh Rishi's award winning turn in Gunda, as the gangster Bullah, was so bad, but his beard (which was his very own mind you) was on Fleek! Of course no one in this country would have ever heard about Gunda without Pretentious Movie Reviews so we owe them a thank you as well! And if you haven't seen this classic, get onto YouTube now, and watch it, it'll be the best two hours (or four if you count buffer time) youll ever have spent!

4. Character: Seneca Crane Movie: The Hunger Games

via GIPHY The only reason this character is even on the list, is not because the character or the actor portraying the character was great, it was simply because of the amazing beard art he wore. Come to think of it, we haven't even bothered to find out the name of the actor who played the role, that's how epic his beard was!

3. Character: Hagrid Movie: Harry Potter (most of them until he dies, or explodes or is eaten or whatever)

via GIPHY Meet Hagrid, the only adult (after Dumbledore) to take Harry Potter seriously. And also meet Hagrid's beard, the most epic character from the Harry Potter series!

2. Character: Pai Mei Movie: Kill Bill

via GIPHY The most epic scene from Kill Bill is Beatrix Kiddo's training montage where she swipes wildly at this greying Chinese teacher with a Samurai sword and he coolly ascends into the air and lands squarely on the edge of her blade. And if you didn't already guess it, he's Pai Mei! And the winner is...

1. Character: Any character Chuck Norris has ever played'

via GIPHY And you thought we'd forgotten the Rajnikant of Hollywood except he's legit badass. (insert Check Norris joke here!) So that was our list of the top 10 beards in cinema. Agree, disagree, comments, hit us up in the comments below or on social media. And until next time, don't bother shaving, it's simply not worth it!
